Pitt Finds New Jersey Fertile Ground for Recruiting

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt comments on New Jersey high school football recruits
For years, Rutgers football fans were saddled with the knowledge that most of the state's top high school football recruits chose to play their college ball outside of the Garden State.

Current Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano has done a good job of keeping the kids home, but now Newark Star-Ledger reporter Brendan Prunty says that Pittburgh head coach Dave Wannstedt is getting good at poaching talent.

The Blue stars shutout the White stars 34-0 to win the 20th annual Adam Taliaferro All-Star Football Classic at Rowan University.

The Press of Atlantic City reports that Blue team dominated from the start in the game that featured senior high school football players from southern New Jersey.

The game raises money for the Adam Taliaferro Foundation.  Taliaferro, who played his high school football at Eastern, was paralyzed while playing at Penn State in 2000.  After first being told he would never walk, Taliaferro has recovered and works as a lawyer in Philadelphia.

Legendary Phillipsburg High School Football Coach Passes Away on Father's Day

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

Phillipsburg lost a true legend Sunday when Harold Bellis passed away at the age of 93.

I met Mr. Bellis early in my broadcasting career while doing Stateliner football games as a teenager at WEST-AM radio in the early 80's.  To say Bellis was a nice man, is an understatement...this man was Phillipsburg football.

In 1933, Bellis was the captain of the Stateliners undefeated football team.  As head football coach from 1954 to 1967, he led the school to two undefeated seasons.

And, while he will be missed, Stateliners fans will also be able to remember Mr. Bellis by looking at Maloney Stadium's scoreboard where it honors the him by calling the turf Harold Bellis Field.

There are several good stories in today's Express-Times that honor Phillipsburg First Man of Football.

The NJSIAA denied the school's request, but did give the team with the smallest enrollment in the all non-public division a little relief by ruling that DePaul doesn't have to play powers Bergen Catholic and Don Bosco Prep for two years.
