New Jersey Schools Vote Down Proposal to Create Overall State Football Championship

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

Discussion on creating a new playoff system that would crown an overall group champion in the Garden State will have to wait until at least 2013.

A proposal to change the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association constitution, so that its member schools could consider a plan for expanding the playoffs to include an overall group champ, didn't receive the necessary two-thirds votes at the NJSIAA's 94th annual business meeting.

The proposal needed 190 votes, but only received 167.  102 schools voted against and three abstained, which means the matter cannot be presented again any sooner than 2013.

Had the membership ratified the change to the constitution, the state would then have considered a plan to expand the playoffs that was being spearheaded by East Brunswick head coach Marcus Borden and Brick athletic director Bill Bruno.

Back in May, I spoke to both Borden and Bruno on the National High School Coaches Association Sports Hour about the plan.  Click here to listen to that interview.

Don Bosco Prep Finishes #1 in Final Star-Ledger High School Football Poll

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

After 46 straight wins and six straight Non-Public Group IV titles, there's no surprise that Don Bosco Prep finishes #1 in the Star-Ledger Top 20 High School Football Poll.  It's the 8th time that DBP has finished as the newspaper's #1 team.

Finishing behind the Ironmen was Bergen Catholic, which suffered two of its three losses at the hands of the Ironmen.

Don Bosco isn't finished though...there's a very good chance that the Ironmen will be crowned national champs in the next few weeks considering they are currently ranked #1 by MaxPreps and USA Today.

Final Star-Ledger Top 20

1. Don Bosco Prep (11-0)
2. Bergen Catholic (8-3)
3. St. Joseph (Hammonton) (10-0)

North Bergen Sends Legendary Coach Out on a Memorable Finish

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

North Bergen head coach Vin Ascolese's 50-year coaching career came to an end in an incredible way on Saturday in the North Jersey I, Group 4 championship game.

Underdog North Bergen stunned previously unbeaten Montclair 14-13 when Debray Tavarez caught a 22-yard touchdown pass between three defenders with no time left on the clock.

Ascolese retires as New Jersey's third winningest coach with a career record of 359-128-7.  The title was the seventh for the 74-year old coach at North Bergen.

Don Bosco Prep Wins 6th Straight State Championship

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

There was a lot of hopes in Kentucky and South Carolina that #1 Don Bosco Prep would trip-up against its arch-rival Bergen Catholic in the New Jersey Non-Public Group IV championship.

A loss by the Ironmen would open the door for #2 Trinity (Kentucky) and #3 Gaffney (South Carolina) to have a shot at claiming MaxPreps' "mythical" national championship.  Of course, both would have to grab gold this weekend themselves.

Well, DBP wasted no time showing why it deserves its second national title in three years.  Head coach Greg Toal's team never struggled like it did in its September 30th regular season match-up against BC, rolling to a 42-14 win, which gave the school its sixth straight state title and pushed its win streak to 46 straight.

In the September 30th game, Bergen Catholic took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter before losing 33-22.

BTW...Trinity did its part by beating Scott County 62-21 Friday night to capture Kentucky's 6A title.  This afternoon, Gaffney will take-on Byrnes for South Carolina's Class AAAA Division I title.

New Jersey High School Football Scores - Week 5

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle
Don Bosco Prep, the nation's #1 ranked team according to several national poll, including MaxPreps, took-down another power football team from another powerful state Saturday night.

The Ironmen beat #9 St. Edward (Lakewood, OH) 38-7 at Fordham University in the Bronx in New York City. The victory, which was DBP's 40th straight, gives the school wins over teams from California (Mission Viejo HS), Florida (Manatee HS) and Ohio this season.

Don Bosco (5-0) played well on both sides of the ball with quarterback Mike Yankovich completing 15 of 20 passes for 165 yards. Sophomore running back Jabrill Peppers also ran for three scores.

The win snapped St. Ed's 21-game win streak. Last year, the Eagles won Ohio's Division 1 state championship.

New Jersey High School Football Scores - Week 1

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

Don Bosco Prep, the #1 team in the nation according to MaxPreps and USA Today and several others, ran its win streak to 36 straight with a 35-7 win over Mission Viejo from California.

DBP used a solid running game that racked-up 208 yards on the ground to beat the Diablos, who entered the game ranked #10 by USA Today.  Mission Viejo now goes onto the list of national powers that have lost to the Ironmen from Ramsey.  In recent years, Don Bosco has beaten De La Salle (California), Prattville (Alabama), Gilman (Maryland) and St. Ignatius (Ohio).

Earlier this year, I spoke with DBP head coach Greg Toal on the High School America radio show  about his program.  Since taking over in 1999, Toal has led the Ironmen to a record of 133-10.

Click here to listen to that interview with Coach Toal.

Don Bosco Prep's Greg Toal will be a Guest on High School Football America Radio Show Tonight at 7PM EST

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

Greg Toal, the man who built Don Bosco Prep into a national high school football power, will join me as a guest tonight on the High School Football America radio show.

Toal, who owns a 132-10 record in 12-years as DBP's head coach, will discuss this year's team that is ranked #1 in the nation by MaxPreps.  The Ironmen have won five straight New Jersey Non-Public Group 4 state titles, plus a "mythical" national championship in 2009.

Last year Toal was named ESPN RISE's National High School Coach of the Year after leading a team of underclassmen to the school's fifth straight championship.  The Ironmen bring a 35-game win streak into this season that sees Toal return over 60-players from his 2010 squad.

Over the past several year's Toal has taken DBP's program to the national stage, picking-up big national stage wins over De La Salle, California's two-time defending Open Division champ.  Last season, the Ironmen beat Ohio's St. Ignatius and Gilman from Baltimore.

Other guests on tonight's show: Gary Rankin, head coach of Alcoa High School in Tennessee, which has won seven straight state titles and Maty Mauk, quarterback at Kenton High School in Ohio.  Mauk, who is a Missouri recruit, is poised to break several national passing records, including career yards passing and touchdowns.

Warren Wolf Ends Career After 52 Years on High School Football Sidelines

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

83-years young, Warren Wolf has retired for the last time.

Earlier this week, Wolf, who is New Jersey's winningest public schools coach with 364 wins, retired after one year at Lakewood High.

Wolf came-out of a retirement last year to try to end the Piners' 27-game losing streak.  The streak reached 33 last season, before Lakewood beat Central Regional 20-15 on October 30th.

Lakewood ended the 2010 season with a 3-7 record, the school's best since 2002.

Wolf retired the first time in 2008 after 51 years at Brick High School.  When he called it quits, he was the state's all-time leader in coaching victories with 361.  That record was broken in 2009 by Pope John's Vic Pasternostro, who retired earlier this year with 373 victories.

New Jersey Moving Closer to "True" State Football Champs

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

By December, fans will know whether the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association will begin crowning overall state football champs.  Currently, the NJSIAA only awards sectional championships.

Earlier this week, the NJSIAA executive committee approved a proposal to allow its member schools to vote on an amendment to the state athletic constitution that would extend the playoffs that would allow for state group championships.  If the amendment is approved by a two-third majority, New Jersey could begin  playing for overall state titles in 2013.

Under the present set-up, the NJSIAA crowns 19 sectional and non-public champs.  The new system will result in seven champions.

The path to overall state champs began when Bill Bruno, athletic director at Brick Township Schools, and Marcus Borden, head football coach at East Brunswick, authored separate proposals to extend the playoffs.  The two will now work together to create a plan that will be voted-on in December.

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

After a couple of head coaching at private schools, Tim McAneney is moving onto a head coaching position at a public school.

The 42-year old McAneney, who coached at Bishop Eutace and Holy Cross, is the new head coach at Lenape High School.  He takes over for Greg Harvey, who resigned after a 4-6 season.

McAneney led Holy Cross to a NJSIAA Non-Public Group B state title in 2008.

Dowling Out After Two Tough Years at Brick Township

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

Following a high school football legend with back-to-back 4-6 seasons has led to Patrick Dowling not being asked back as the head coach at Brick Township.

Dowling replaced Warren Wolf, who prior to his retirement was the school's only football coach and one of the winningest head coaches in New Jersey high school football history.  At the time of his retirement, Wolf was very outspoken that his replacement should have either played or coached for him.

Dowling was neither, and that upset Wolf and the community.

by Jeff Fisher
New Jersey High School Football Huddle

Ryan Ditze has the task of following a legendary coach at Phillipsburg High School.

The 36-year old Ditze, who played his high school at the now-defunct All Saints Regional High School in Phillipsburg, is the new head coach of the Stateliners, who has to follow in the footsteps of Bob Stem

Affectionately know as "Stemmy", Bob Stem won 285 games in 34 years as a head coach at P'burg (two stints) and Bethlehem Catholic in Pennsylvania.  Included in the 285 wins was two Pennsylvania state championships and four state sectional titles.

During his college days, Ditze was an All-American receiver at Albright College.  For the past several seasons, Ditze was an assistant coach at Freedom High School in Pennsylvania.
