Cedar Grove Pitches a Shutout on Its Way to Another New Jersey Championship

When it comes to New Jersey sectional championship games Cedar Grove should just put a big zero on their trophies.

Cedar Grove beat Belvidere 17-0 Sunday to capture the New Jersey 2 Group 1 title. It was the school's fifth sectional championship and the fourth time they've one gold with the defense pitching a shutout. The other shutout wins came in 2004, 2000 and 1983.

Cedar Grove shutdown a Belvidere offense that featured a quarterback that threw for over 2,000 yards and a running back who rushed for over 1,600. Belvidere was held to 98 yards in total offense.

Sophomore Quarterback Leads East Orange To Finish New Jersey High School Football Title

New Jersey began its sectional high school football championships in 1974...33 years later East Orange captured the school's first title.

Sunday behind sophomore quarterback Quadir Pendleton led his team past Montclair 31-13 for the North Jersey Section 1 Group 4 title. Pendleton completed 9-of-16 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown to lead the come from behind victory.

West Side Sheds Losers Tag and Claims First New Jersey Championship

Eight years removed for a 70-game losing streak West Side from Newark captured the school's first high school football championship beating South Plainfield 20-0 on Sunday to capture the North Jersey 2 Group 3 title at Giants Stadium.

West Side could be good for years to come with sophomore running back Carlos Cox leading the way. Cox led the offense on a snowy turf picking up 174 yards on just 14-carries. Meanwhile the South Plainfield ground game was limited to just 20-yards on the ground.

Carteret Goes From 1-2 to State Champ

Carteret beat Rumson 20-14 Sunday to win the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 2 championship.

It was Carteret's first title since 1996, and a pleasant surprise considering the team started the season 1-2 after back-to-back losses to South Plainfield and North Brunswick. However both of those losses were only by one-point.

Carteret finishes the season at 9-3 with all three losses coming by a combined margin of five points.

#17 Don Bosco Beats St. Peter's For Another New Jersey Title

Just like last year's Non-Public Group IV championship game between Don Bosco Prep and St. Peter's Prep, it was a close first half, but in the end, DBP was too much for SPP.

Nationally-ranked Don Bosco won its 24th straight game on the strength of a 28-point outburst in the third quarter that lifted the Ironmen to a 42-14 win. The last team to beat Don Bosco was St. Peter's 22-15 in the 2005 final.

Hunterdon Central North Jersey 2 Group 4 Champs

Hunterdon Central's defense put a goose egg on the board in the second half of Saturday's North Jersey 2 Group IV championship game against Piscataway, and that fueled the Red Devils 23-13 win.

Holy Cross D's-It-Up To Win New Jersey Non-Public Group II Title

Holy Cross played its Non-Public Group II New Jersey High School Football Championship against Gloucester Catholic without its star quarterback Tommy Reilly, who sat out the game with a high-ankle sprain. So with Reilly and his 64 career TDs on the bench, Holy Cross turned to its defense to be Gloucester Catholic 17-0 and win the school's seventh non-public championship.

The H-C defense limited Gloucester Catholic to just nine yards in the first half and 67 for the game. It also came up with seven sacks of quarterback Mike Calzonetti.

Howell Captures New Jersey Group IV Title

Howell quarterback Tim Lamirande was nearly perfect Friday night to lead his school to its first New Jersey sectional title beating West Windsor-South 46-13 for the Central Jersey Group IV title.

Lamirande was 16-for-19 for 246 yards and three touchdowns. The workhorse of the game award had to go to West Windsor-South running back David Twamley who carried the ball 38-times for 253-yards. Amazingly WWS outgained Howell in total offense with 368-yards to the champ's 358.

Asbury Park Captures First New Jersey High School Football Title 23-Years

It took nearly a quarter of a century, but Asbury Park is celebrating its first New Jersey high school football championship since 1984.

Friday night Asbury Park (11-1) beat Keansburg 32-18 to win the Central Jersey Group I title at Rutgers Stadium. It was the second time this year that A-P beat Keansburg (10-2).

Quarterback Will Johnson and receiver Derrell Bell did most of the damage in the championship win as they hooked-up on three touchdown passes.

#1 Vs. #2 In Jersey Championship Showdown

For the third straight year Don Bosco Prep and St. Peter's Prep are in charge of determining who's the #1 team in New Jersey.

DBP and SPP wil square-off Saturday at 1 o'clock at Giants Stadium for the NJSIAA Non-Public Group 4 championship. All season long these two have been ranked #1 (Don Bosco) and #2 (St. Peter's) respectively by the Newark Star-Ledger, which serves as the state's official pollster. Don Bosco is also ranked #17 by the USA Today.

Saturday's game will serve as the rubber match of the last three year with Don Bosco (11-0) winning last year's title 41-0, while St. Peter's (11-0) beat the Ironmen 22-15 in 2005. It will be DBP's seventh appearance in the final in the last eight year with titles coming in 2002, 2003 and 2006.

Easton (PA) Beats Phillipsburg (NJ) In 101st Turkey Day Game

What I consider the granddaddy of all Turkey Day high school football games was renewed for the 101st time on Thursday at Lafayette College when Easton (PA) and Phillipsburg (NJ) played their annual border war.

Easton behind senior blue-chipper Jarred Holley beat Phillipsburg 17-6, which for the first time in several seasons marked the last game for both teams. Holley, who has played in four Easton/P'burg games, picked-off three passes and accounted for 134 yards in total offense and one touchdown.

Easton finishes the season with an 8-4 mark, while Phillipsburg ended 5-5.

Over the past couple of seasons, both schools had to play this one and then turn around two days later and play a state playoff game. This year both teams lost early in their respective state tournamaments.

#6 Immaculata Beats #5 Hunterdon Central in Battle of Unbeatens

Immaculata's win streak reached 21 games Friday night with a 16-6 win over previously undefeated Hunterdon Central. Immaculata entered the game ranked #6 by the Newark Star-Ledger, H-C was #5.

A packed house of 7,000 turned out to watch Immaculata's star tailback Theo Riddick put on a first half show that gave his team a 10-point halftime lead. Riddick rushed for 151 of his game-high 195 yards in the first half.

The second half belonged to the Immaculata defense that picked off three Richie Lachner passes. Lachner entered the game having thrown just one interception all year. Hunterdon Central turned the ball over six times in the game.

Phillipsburg Becomes First New Jersey School To Win 600 Games

Phillipsburg High School had to wait a couple of days to make New Jersey high school football history, but it was worth the wait.

After two consecutive rainouts, Phillipsburg beat Hillsborough 21-7 Sunday to claim the school's 600th victory. As the above photo states, the Stateliners are the Garden State's #1 team in victory.

Congratulations to Phillipsburg, its coaches, players and adminstrators.
