Recruiting will not be allowed in New Jersey. That's the message that the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association sent to schools through the state Thursday when it stripped North Bergen of its 2011 sectional football championship.

Last month, the NJSIAA placed the school's entire sports program on two years probation after the state's governing body found that the school's longtime football coach Vincent Ascolese had recruited two players to play for the Bruins. However, that ruling didn't include the stripping of the North Jersey 1, Group 4 title the team won in a 14-13 victory over Monclair when North Bergen scored a touchdown on the very last play of the game.

Thursday, the NJSIAA's executive committee voted 24-0 in favor of taking away the title, which marks what many believe is the first time that the state has every stripped a school of a championship.

Ascolese, who is currently battling cancer, retired at the end of the year as one of the state's winningest coaches.

Before the investigation began earlier this year, I spoke to Coach Ascolese about his long career in New Jersey football.
The New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association voted against a statewide playoff system last year, but on Wednesday it decided to add a fifth classification to its public school football playoffs.

The NJSIAA executive committee voted 21-5 with three abstentions to expand the number of sectional football champions from 20 to 24 by adding a Group V classification. The vote means that 32 additional teams will make the playoffs in 2012.

The new classification means that each section will be reduced to about 15 teams from the current 19. The NJSIAA also passed a rule allowing teams with a record below .500 to be eligible to fill remaining postseason openings based on power points.

The non-public playoffs will remain unchanged for the time being, although a proposal is in the works to change the non-public format as well.

Jeff Fisherhttps://profiles.google.com/110792276815347636407noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20954044.post-18535527081481413402012-03-20T18:06:00.000-07:002012-03-20T18:06:57.250-07:002012-03-20T18:06:57.250-07:00Howell's Corey Davies Resigns after 21 Years as Head Coachby Jeff Fisher

North Bergen beat previously unbeaten Montclair 14-13 to win the North Jersey I Group 4 title in December. It was a memorable game because it ended when North Bergen's Debray Tavarez caught a 22-yard touchdown pass as time expired.

It was the final game of head coach Vince Ascolese's 50-year career that saw him retire as the state's third winningest head coach with a record of 359-128-7.

Publish reports indicate that two of Ascolese's players will be looked at during the investigation by the NJSIAA. The Star-Ledger is also reporting that the North Bergen School District has retained a law firm in the case.

If North Bergen is found guilty, it could be stripped of the title.

Coach Ascolese was a guest on the High School Football America radio show before the allegations broke. Click here to listen to the interview detailing his career.

Jeff Fisherhttps://profiles.google.com/110792276815347636407noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20954044.post-52026259529689327982011-12-08T21:05:00.000-08:002011-12-08T21:05:45.448-08:002011-12-08T21:05:45.448-08:00New Jersey Schools Vote Down Proposal to Create Overall State Football Championshipby Jeff Fisher

A proposal to change the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association constitution, so that its member schools could consider a plan for expanding the playoffs to include an overall group champ, didn't receive the necessary two-thirds votes at the NJSIAA's 94th annual business meeting.

The proposal needed 190 votes, but only received 167. 102 schools voted against and three abstained, which means the matter cannot be presented again any sooner than 2013.

Had the membership ratified the change to the constitution, the state would then have considered a plan to expand the playoffs that was being spearheaded by East Brunswick head coach Marcus Borden and Brick athletic director Bill Bruno.

Back in May, I spoke to both Borden and Bruno on the National High School Coaches Association Sports Hour about the plan. Click here to listen to that interview.

Jeff Fisherhttps://profiles.google.com/110792276815347636407noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20954044.post-61805919686772126202011-12-08T20:21:00.000-08:002011-12-08T20:21:17.919-08:002011-12-08T20:21:17.919-08:00Don Bosco Prep Finishes #1 in Final Star-Ledger High School Football Pollby Jeff Fisher

A loss by the Ironmen would open the door for #2 Trinity (Kentucky) and #3 Gaffney (South Carolina) to have a shot at claiming MaxPreps' "mythical" national championship. Of course, both would have to grab gold this weekend themselves.

Well, DBP wasted no time showing why it deserves its second national title in three years. Head coach Greg Toal's team never struggled like it did in its September 30th regular season match-up against BC, rolling to a 42-14 win, which gave the school its sixth straight state title and pushed its win streak to 46 straight.

The Ironmen beat #9 St. Edward (Lakewood, OH) 38-7 at Fordham University in the Bronx in New York City. The victory, which was DBP's 40th straight, gives the school wins over teams from California (Mission Viejo HS), Florida (Manatee HS) and Ohio this season.

Don Bosco (5-0) played well on both sides of the ball with quarterback Mike Yankovich completing 15 of 20 passes for 165 yards. Sophomore running back Jabrill Peppers also ran for three scores.

The win snapped St. Ed's 21-game win streak. Last year, the Eagles won Ohio's Division 1 state championship.
