The New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association voted against a statewide playoff system last year, but on Wednesday it decided to add a fifth classification to its public school football playoffs.

The NJSIAA executive committee voted 21-5 with three abstentions to expand the number of sectional football champions from 20 to 24 by adding a Group V classification.  The vote means that 32 additional teams will make the playoffs in 2012.

The new classification means that each section will be reduced to about 15 teams from the current 19.  The NJSIAA also passed a rule allowing teams with a record below .500 to be eligible to fill remaining postseason openings based on power points.

The non-public playoffs will remain unchanged for the time being, although a proposal is in the works to change the non-public format as well.
