Legendary Phillipsburg High School Football Coach Passes Away on Father's Day

Phillipsburg lost a true legend Sunday when Harold Bellis passed away at the age of 93.

I met Mr. Bellis early in my broadcasting career while doing Stateliner football games as a teenager at WEST-AM radio in the early 80's.  To say Bellis was a nice man, is an understatement...this man was Phillipsburg football.

In 1933, Bellis was the captain of the Stateliners undefeated football team.  As head football coach from 1954 to 1967, he led the school to two undefeated seasons.

And, while he will be missed, Stateliners fans will also be able to remember Mr. Bellis by looking at Maloney Stadium's scoreboard where it honors the him by calling the turf Harold Bellis Field.

There are several good stories in today's Express-Times that honor Phillipsburg First Man of Football.
