Passaic High School To Retire Heyward's Number

Passaic High School will retire Craig "Ironhead" Heyward's #34 jersey during a pre-game ceremony on September 30th prior to the Indians game against Bloomfield.

Heyward died on May 27th in his home in Georgia following a long battle with a recurring brain tumor. At Passaic, Heyward ran for a school-record 5,142 yards and 75 touchdowns. He also led the school to three state sectional championships from 1980-83.

Heyward went on to play at the University of Pittsburgh and then became a first-round draft choice of the New Orleans Saints in 1988. He played for five NFL teams in 11 seasons before a chordoma cut his career short in 1998.

Public Beats Private In New Jersey Showdown

When Bergen Catholic was trying to fill an opening in its 2006 high school football schedule, the school emailed every school in the state. Only one team responded to playing the private school power....Phillipsburg.

On Saturday the defending state champion Stateliners did the public schools in Jersey proud by beating Bergen Catholic 28-27 in the Kickoff Classic at Giants Stadium.

Hopatcong's Martinek Commits To Rutgers

Hopatcong's Joe Martinek needs only 1,167 yards in his senior season to become New Jersey's all-time leading rusher. While there will be pressure on the 6-0, 195-pound tailback to eclipse Keyport's Kenny Catthouse, at least the pressure of where he'll play his college ball is gone with his verbal commitment to Rutgers.

Phillipsburg Preview

Phillipsburg will find out very quickly if it has what it takes to win its second straight North 2 Group 4 state championship. The Stateliners will open the season again Bergen Catholic, one of the top private schools in the Garden State on September 9th.

Head Coach Bob Stem (241-86-6 in 30 years) returned to alma mater last year, and ran the table. This year, Stem knows the league better, and that should help, especially with record-setting quarterback Justin Viscomi back.

Carty Takes Over At Bound Brook

Bound Brook High School has chosen its new head coach, who will go perfectly with its new league.

28-year old Kevin Carty will lead Bound Brook into its inaugural season in the Skyland Conference this fall, which should be an easy transition thanks to Carty's experience with the league. Carty led Somerville to the Skyland Conference Raritan Division title in 1994 while playing quarterback for his dad, who this year will begin his 13th year at the head man at Somerville.

Pictures From Phillipsburg High School's Maloney Field

Phillipsburg High School is the winningest football program in New Jersey. Last year the Stateliners won North 2 Group 4 championship last season, which came on the heels of a runner-up finish in 2004.

P'burg, as it's know to the locals, is the place to be when the Stateliners are at home. 7,000-plus rabid Garnet and Gray fans always pack Maloney Field.

Last month I took a trip to the Garden State, and I'd like to share some of the photos from this great high school football field. If you're ever in Phillipsburg on a Friday night and the Liners are at home, this is a don't miss for the true high school football fan.

2006 Season To Start Off With Big Tripleheader

New Jersey high school football fans could be in for quite a treat on the opening weekend this year. A preliminary agreement has been reached to have five of the top teams in the state, plus one from New York play in a tripleheader September 9th at Giants Stadium.

The match-ups would pit Bergan Catholic against Phillipsburg, St. Peter's Prep would take on Delbarton and St. Joseph of Montvale wil play Poly Prep of Brooklyn.

Three of the teams, Phillipsburg, St. Peter's Prep and St. Joseph of Montvale, won state championships last year. Delbarton played in the state final last year while Bergen Catholic won its sixth state championship in ten years in 2004.

Don Bosco Prep and St. Joseph Montvale "Hit" The Road

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association has made an exception that will create a couple extra marquee high school football match-ups next year.

The executive committee of the NJSIAA has granted St. Joseph of Montvale and Don Bosco Prep of Ramsey a two-year waiver of the 70 percent rule, which means both schools may seek an out-of-state opponent to complete their football schedules.

The reason the waiver was needed was because earlier this year the NJSIAA stepped-in to try to even things up between the public and non-public schools in the Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League. The state governing body realigned the NNJIL divisional structure in January so public school football teams would have to play no more than one game per season against each of the four parochial schools.

The reason for that change, since 2001 the publics have only won 9 out of 116 games with the private schools.

The realignment plan guaranteed every team a seven-game schedule for the next two seasons, but for Don Bosco Prep and St. Joseph that seventh game would be a second contest against each other unless each could find a third independent game. However, if the second St. Joseph-Don Bosco Prep game were replaced it would have placed both schools in violation of the state's rule that states that a school must play at least 70-percent of its contests against New Jersey teams prior to the cutoff date to qualify for the state tournament.

When both schools decided they didn't want a second game and then couldn't find any New Jersey teams to play them, the NJSIAA had to allow them to look for out-of-state teams.

The good news for football fans, St. Joseph has verbal agreements to play Poly Prep and Newburgh Free Academy from New York. Don Bosco Prep, who will face national power St. Joseph of Philadelphia and then one of the top teams in Ohio in the second annual McDonald's Kirk Herbstreit's Ohio vs. USA high school football classic.

Neither school has booked a three out of state opponent, but as soon as that happens, The High School Football Huddle will let you know

Burlington-Olympic Football League Realignment Creates New Match-Ups

One of the Garden State's most balanced high school football leagues, the Burlington-Olympic Football League, has just finished it's bi-annual realignment based on enrollment. The changes take effect with the upcoming 2006 season.

The BOFL consists of four division with the American being for the biggest schools and the smallest playing in the Freedom Division. The league also has a Liberty and a Patriot Division.

The realignment will create several marquee match-ups including Burlington Township facing Holy Cross and Shawnee playing Cherokee.

The NJSIAA has approved a realignment that makes one division for the parochial schools and two divisions for the publics. The public divisions will be aligned according to power points accumulated over three years, not on the basis of enrollment.

The realignment, which will be re-evaluated in two years is meant to help the publics out, since the 13 public schools have only won nine of 116 games since 2001.

The stronger public division will be comprised of Ridgewood, Hackensack, Montclair, Teaneck, Paterson Eastside, Clifton and Nutley while the second division will have Bergen Tech, Paramus, Bloomfield, Paterson Kennedy, Passaic, Barringer and Belleville. The non-public division is comprised of Don Bosco Prep of Ramsey, St. Joseph of Montvale, Bergen Catholic of Oradell and Paramus Catholic.

Under the NJSIAA realignment, the public schools in the NNJIL will play the other six schools in their division and one parochial school. Meanwhile, based on their current power-point tally, Don Bosco Prep and St. Joseph will play each other twice and Bergen Catholic and Paramus Catholic once each. Don Bosco and St. Joseph will also play three public schools while Bergen Catholic and Paramus Catholic play four public and three parochial teams.

Hackettstown Head Coach Resigns

Hackettstown's search for a new head football coach is underway.

Art Piancone has resigned after a 7-4 season, the best for the Tigers since 1996. After a 2-3 start, Hackettstown ripped off five straight wins to earn a berth in the NJSIAA North 2 Group 2 Section Playoffs. The Tigers beat West Essex 13-11 in the opening round, which was the school's first in the postseason since 1981

Though Piancone claimed it was merely coincidence, he also stepped down in his first tenure at Hackettstown in 1992 after enjoying his best season after assuming the head coaching duties in 1990. His '92 team went 7-3 and also qualified for the sectional championships before losing 30-22 to Dover in the opening round of the sectional playoffs.

This was Piancone's second stint as Hackettstown's head coach. He took over from Jerry Gundry in 2002 and amassed a record of 20-21. Combined with his first stint when he went 15-12-1, Piancone's career mark with the Tigers is 35-33-1.
