Regular Season Opens in New Jersey

New Jersey High School Football Huddle

The 2009 regular season gets started tonight, but not much has changed from since the end of the 2008 season. Most of last year's best find themselves in the Star-Ledger's pre-season Top 20. At the top is Don Bosco Prep, which will get a challenge right out of the box when it faces national power De La Salle of Concord, California. DBP has been the #1 team in the Star-Ledger final rankings three years running. The Star-Ledger has a preview.

Wayne Hills has something in common with De La Salle. Wayne Hills is shooting for the Spartans' national record win streak of 151 straight that ended in 2004...however the Patriots have a long way to go. The Patriots enter this season on a 52-game win streak, the second longest in the nation...99 to go boys!

How can you rank a team #2 when they only play one team ranked in your top 20. Where teams like Bergen Catholic, St. Joseph (Montvale), and St. Peters play each other and Don Bosco every year. That's a high ranking for a team who doesn't play at the highest level of competition. Record only does not rank a team competition also comes in to play.

With realignment, Wayne Hills will get tested this year to see if they're worthy of the Star-Ledger ranking. Camden Catholic found out Saturday in its loss to Camden that pre-season rankings don't mean a thing!
